Amazonite is a silicate , and so forms part of the most abundant and largest group of minerals and gemstones on earth. Amazonite is made up of silicon, aluminium, potassium and oxygen and owes its distinctive green colour to the additional presence of minute impurities of lead that have become lodged within the body of the amazonite crystals.

Amazonite is used a great deal in jewelry commonly used to make beads and cameos. It has sometimes been mistaken for or used instead of the more precious gemstone such as an emerald. It has also been a substitute for turquoise and some forms of jade.
