Barite, is a highly common mineral found in
nature that has many uses. The compound itself is mined for
barium but because barite has such interesting crystal features,
it is found in the possession of mineral collectors and some
specimens are highly sought after and catch a hefty price.
One of the most important uses barite is for
drilling muds used in the exploration for, and production of,
oil and gas. When drilling a deep hole, the cuttings, or rock
fragments, from the drilling must be flushed from the hole to
prevent clogging of the hole. A mixture of clay, water and finely
ground barite is used to grind through rock to a depth where
oil or gas may be found.
