Biotite is a brown mineral which
shows a property called pleochroism. That is, under a single polarizing
filter, the grains change color (from light brown to dark brown)
when rotated. Biotite survives a certain amount of weathering
and is found in soils, sediments and sedimentary rocks. Weathered
biotite becomes relatively brassy or bronzy in color and has been
mistaken for gold.
Biotite is a very unique mineral that can be easily broken apart
into very thin sheets. It is a form of mica that is very soft
enough that it can be scratched with a fingernail. Biotite is
usually black or brown and is used in a variety of ways. It is
usually ground up and added to other things such as paint, waterproofing
sealers, and lubricants, or greases.
