Indicolite is the rarest and most valuable
member of the tourmaline mineral
elbaite. Indicolite
is one of the rarer varieties of elbaite. It is generally azure
or deep blue although it may sometimes also have discernable
green tones too, even the cat's eye green as shown above.
Indicolites show different colours depending
on the angle that they are viewed from. This phenomenon is known
as pleochroism. Craftsmen who cut gem quality indicolite always
pay special attention to bringing out this beautiful effect
to its best advantage, thus creating billiant colors. All the
characteristics make it very desirable to gemstone collectors
as well as those who wear it as decorative jewellery.
