Interested in Metal Detecting?
What kind do I buy?
Thats a good question - how serious or experienced are you? Cost is
a huge factor, this usally overrides passion! Start with what you
are comfortable with both in price and options. most new detectors
come with a comprehensive guide or booklet that can get you going.
you usually start in your own back yard to get a feel for the machine
and its abilities (or limitations!). Believe it or not, a decent place
to find good priced detectors are in your local club or organization.
these guys are always trading up and want nothing more than to pass
on theirs to someone interested in taking up the detecting hobby.
Open your yellow pages or better yet, use the internet to find one
near you. Classified ads or local pawn shops offer a limited supply
of metal detectors, but "Buyer-Beware".

What image comes to mind when you hear "Metal detector"?
- The Beach, of course. this is where 99% of enthusiests start. The
thought of absent-minded rich people just fuel your imagination and
why not? How many times have you gone to the beach yourself only to
get home and realize you lost your watch, ring, or that shoeful of
pocket change? There are different signals that are emitted from the
detector that indicate a few things. Density of the object, distance
to the object and sometimes even size. Adjusting the sensitivity can
be good when you start or you can drive yourself crazy. But keep in
mind that turning down the sensitvity can also miss that secret treasure
you are seeking.detectors are built with some discrimination that
helps you bypass most objects like nails, foil, pulltabs, etc. But
the more you discriminate, the less depth you are going to have. keep
at it, have patience and learn how to read your metal detector to
learn what is passable and what is worth bending over to investigate!
