Rubellite is the reddish pink and purple color variety of tourmaline. The colors found in tourmalines are the result of chemical impurities and the more impurities are present the darker the color. Deep red rubellites is the most valuable form of tourmaline since it is so rare.

Rubellites are very good candidates for gems and jewelry because of the high hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Moh’s scale. In addition, rubellites display pleochroism meaning the color changes when view at different angles. Highly skilled gemstone cutters recognize this and take this into account when cutting a Rubellite to bring out its best color and make it unique.
