Ruby is the red version of the mineral corundum, the second hardest natural mineral known to man, a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. The non-red version of corundum is sapphire. Contrary to popular opinion, not all sapphires are blue, but can be of any color.

The most important factor in the value of a ruby is color, the intensity of red color looks like a hot glowing coal. Ancient people ascribed magical powers to rubies because of the intensity of red, looking like a fire that never extinguished itself. The lower grades of ruby could have a mixture of other colors that dilute the red and produce less intensive red versions.
