Scheelite is made of of calcium, tungsten and oxygen. Scheelite is especially abundant in the US and provides the United States with most of its supply. Scheelite can be a source of tungsten which has the highest melting point of all metals and is used in engine valves, electric lamp filaments and for making tools.

With a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Moh’s Scale, Scheelite is a rather soft stone. Traditionally, it was considered a collector's gem and unsuitable for use in jewelry. However, facet grade Scheelite does occur in several world locations one of which is in the province of Pingwu, China. A sample of a facet grade Scheelite from China is shown above.
