Schorl is the most common member of the tourmaline group. The color is always pitch black. It is not important as a gem material, but sometimes forms large well-formed lustrous crystals of interest to collectors. Because of its hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Moh scale, this attractive stone is used in semi-precious jewelry, carved figurines, obelisks, crystal balls, eggs and as a popular tumbled stone.
