Formerly known as Calamine, it was renamed Smithsonite in 1832 in Honor of James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian. He discovered this mineral and wrote about it in 1803. Smithsonite is composed of zinc carbonate. The presence of cobalt in its crystals makes it appear pink, while copper makes it green or blue. The combinations of cobalt and copper can produce beautiful colors, they have become favorites for mineral collectors around the world. The most common colors are apple-green, blue-green, lavender, purple, yellow and white as well as tan, brown, blue, orange, peach, colorless, gray, pink and red. On the Moh’s scale hardness is 4 to 4.5.
